Individual Therapy for Parents San Francisco

Individual Therapy
for Expecting, New, & Experienced Parents

Parenting is hard– and kids don’t come with an instruction manual!  Plus, the demands of parenting tend to highlight our own growth edges… plus everything that we learned from our own families (helpful and unhelpful!) about ourselves and what it means to be a parent.

Whether you’re facing challenges with your child that you’re not quite sure how to handle, finding yourself struggling to show up as the calm, collected parent you’d like to be, or looking for support around managing your own anxiety or stress levels, our experienced therapists are here to help you transform your experience of parenthood and find a path to a more relaxed and joyful family life.

About Our Approach

Our therapists primarily use strategy-focused, evidence-based approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE), and behavioral parenting for parents of children with attention and behavior challenges– your therapist will personalize these research-based approaches to best meet your needs and your goals for therapy.

No matter what kind of parenting challenges you’re facing, you’ll walk away from sessions with new tools for your parenting toolbox, new ways of thinking about your child and/or yourself, new skills to manage your own stress, anxiety, mood, and/or emotional reactivity, and resources and a roadmap to support you as you move forward.

About our Therapy Approach

Maternal Mental Health

Whether you’re pregnant, brand new to motherhood, or already deep in the trenches, you don’t have to do this alone.

We offer therapy for moms…….

with expert therapists who are trained in perinatal and maternal mental health and who are moms too, so they understand what you’re going through!

This constant demand for growth and evolution– in combination with the mental load of motherhood and the juggle of doing all the things!-- makes it more likely that as mothers, we will experience anxiety, depression, feelings of overwhelm, or anger or rage.  Many of us find that as we walk the path of motherhood, we can lose track of who we are and what we want our lives to look like.

If this is you, you’re not alone. Let us help.

Our therapists work with California moms using strategy-focused, evidence-based approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to give you new tools and strategies to combat feelings of anxiety, depression, anger, overwhelm, or low self-esteem– and to help you transform your experience of motherhood into one in which you feel confident, competent, connected, and fulfilled.

Moms with new babies

Motherhood is a crazy journey with a steep learning curve. New moms often struggle with feeling worried, sad, and even intrusive thoughts about something bad happening. You don’t have to live with these feelings - they are treatable with evidence-based approaches that help you be present and enjoy the new time with your new baby and family.

Perinatal and postpartum therapy addresses…

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Obsessions and compulsions (including intrusive thoughts)

  • The transition into motherhood

  • Shift in dynamics with your partner

  • Adjusting the family system to a new baby

  • How to connect with other new parents

what to expect

Appointments

Sessions are typically scheduled on a weekly basis to allow your therapist to get to know you and in order to most effectively facilitate change.  Treatment frequency and duration can vary dramatically depending on your goals– so we encourage collaborative and ongoing communication with your therapist about what you’re wanting to see shift or change.

We have many parents who work with us regularly for a period of time, then drop back in from time to time as they hit new developmental challenges with their children or new personal stressors.  Other parents stay with us for longer-term supportive or problem-solving therapy.  Basically, we’re here whenever and however you need us.

Cost per Session

Cost per session varies depending on the experience level of the clinician on our team with whom your child/family is working. Cost for one-time initial intake session ranges from $300 to $490, depending on provider; this session is 45-60 minutes in length and also requires your provider to spend time outside of session reviewing records and background information. Cost of recurring 45-minute sessions following this initial intake appointment ranges from $200 to $325 per 45-minute session.

Our coordinator will provide you with information regarding provider availability and fees during an initial call.

We do not accept health insurance directly, although we are happy to supply clients with documentation necessary for reimbursement by PPO health insurance or medical flexible spending or health savings accounts. Clients with HMO or EPO insurance plans should be aware that their plans will not offer reimbursement for services rendered by an out-of-network provider.

As the result of the 2022 No Surprises Act, please be aware that you have the right to receive a good faith estimate of healthcare treatment costs.  Your Good Faith Estimate will be uploaded to your client portal at the time that you schedule an initial appointment.  However, you can ask our intake coordinator or your provider for this estimate before you schedule a service or at any other time during treatment.  If you receive a bill over $400 more than your good faith estimate, you can dispute the bill.  For more information regarding the good faith estimate and/or dispute process, see your good faith estimate or visit https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
