Individual Therapy for Children and Kids San Francisco

Individual Therapy
for Children

We offer individual therapy for children age four and up who are experiencing challenges with anxiety, negative mood/self-esteem, and emotion regulation.  Our experienced therapists use short-term, evidence-based treatment approaches that focus on teaching kids (and their parents!) skills that they can continue to use and practice after therapy is complete— and personalize these approaches to best meet the needs and goals of each child and family.

About Our Approach

Our treatment team primarily uses a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approach.  CBT is the research-supported gold standard intervention for anxiety and depression in childhood, and this approach also can be helpful in working with kids struggling with anger management or emotion regulation.  CBT helps children increase their awareness of their own emotions, teaches them to think about what thoughts are tied to their emotions (and to check whether those thoughts are accurate or helpful!), and builds their ability to use mindfulness strategies and cool-down tools to help themselves stay grounded in difficult moments instead of getting swept away by worry or big emotions.

We see kids as being part of a family system, and parents as integral partners in supporting children’s success!  Consequently, we try to facilitate conversation between parents and kids, and we integrate parents of elementary school-aged kids into part or all of every session, so that parents are aware of the skills kids are learning in-session and have a plan for how best to support their child in practicing these skills outside of the therapy appointment.

what to expect

Appointments

We typically start with an initial parent-only intake appointment, then work with kids on a weekly basis, with additional parent-only sessions every four to six weeks (or more frequently, depending on the client/family!).  We check in regularly with parents and kids about progress, and pare back on the frequency of appointments or terminate when we all agree that children are meeting the goals that brought families to treatment.

For most kids, weekly individual treatment lasts four to six months.  That said, we wait to pare back or wind down until kids and their families agree they’ve met their goals for treatment and are ready to fly independently– and we’re always here if (or when!) kids and families we’ve seen in the past run into new challenges or hurdles down the road.

Cost per Session

Cost per session varies depending on the experience level of the clinician on our team with whom your child/family is working. Cost for one-time initial intake session ranges from $300 to $490, depending on provider; this session is 45-60 minutes in length and also requires your provider to spend time outside of session reviewing records and background information. Cost of recurring 45-minute sessions following this initial intake appointment ranges from $200 to $325 per 45-minute session.

Our coordinator will provide you with more information regarding provider availability and fees during an initial call.

We do not accept health insurance directly, although we are happy to supply families with documentation necessary for reimbursement by PPO health insurance or medical flexible spending or health savings accounts. Families with HMO or EPO insurance plans should be aware that their plans will not offer reimbursement for services rendered by an out-of-network provider.

As the result of the 2022 No Surprises Act, please be aware that you have the right to receive a good faith estimate of healthcare treatment costs. Your Good Faith Estimate will be uploaded to your client portal at the time that you schedule an initial appointment. However, you can ask our intake coordinator or your provider for this estimate before you schedule a service or at any other time during treatment. If you receive a bill over $400 more than your good faith estimate, you can dispute the bill. For more information regarding the good faith estimate and/or dispute process, see your good faith estimate or visit https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
