Individual Therapy for Teens and Tweens San Francisco

Individual Therapy
for Tweens + Teens

If your tween or teen is experiencing challenges with anxiety, negative mood/self-esteem, and emotion regulation, you are in the right place!  Our experienced therapists use short-term, evidence-based treatment approaches that focus on teaching tweens and teens skills that they can continue to use and practice after therapy is complete– and personalize these research-based approaches to best meet the needs and goals of each client.

About Our Approach

Our therapists primarily use strategy-focused, evidence-based approaches such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).  CBT is the research-supported gold standard intervention for anxiety and depression in childhood and adolescence, and this approach also can be helpful in working with kids struggling with anger management or emotion regulation.  CBT helps tweens and teens increase their awareness of their own emotions, teaches them to think about what thoughts are tied to their emotions (and to check whether those thoughts are accurate or helpful!), and builds their ability to use mindfulness strategies and cool-down tools to help themselves stay grounded in difficult moments instead of getting swept away by anxiety or big emotions.

We try to balance tween and teen needs for independence and privacy with the awareness that they are still part of a family system and benefit from parent participation and partnership!  Although we tend not to integrate parents in tween/teen weekly individual sessions in the same way that we do with younger children, we do ask for and welcome parent input (including during an initial parent-only intake appointment), make an effort to facilitate communication between tweens/teens and their parents, and meet with parents without teens present approximately every four to six weeks (or more frequently, depending on the client/family!) in order to provide feedback and offer troubleshooting and collaborative support.

About our approach to therapy

what to expect

Appointments

We check in regularly with both tween/teen clients and their parents about progress, and pare back on frequency of appointments and/or terminate when we all agree that tweens/teens are meeting the goals that brought families to treatment.

For most tweens/teens, weekly individual treatment lasts four to six months. That said, we don’t wind down until everyone is ready– some tweens/teens do choose to stay with us much longer for regular or intermittent supportive work, even after achieving treatment goals– and even if/when you do choose to terminate, we’re always here if (when!) your tween/teen runs into new challenges or hurdles down the road.

Cost per Session

Cost per session varies depending on the experience level of the clinician on our team with whom your child/family is working. Cost for one-time initial intake session ranges from $300 to $490, depending on provider; this session is 45-60 minutes in length and also requires your provider to spend time outside of session reviewing records and background information. Cost of recurring 45-minute sessions following this initial intake appointment ranges from $200 to $325 per 45-minute session.

Our coordinator will provide you with information regarding provider availability and fees during an initial call.

We do not accept health insurance directly, although we are happy to supply families with documentation necessary for reimbursement by PPO health insurance or medical flexible spending or health savings accounts. Families with HMO or EPO insurance plans should be aware that their plans will not offer reimbursement for services rendered by an out-of-network provider.

As the result of the 2022 No Surprises Act, please be aware that you have the right to receive a good faith estimate of healthcare treatment costs.  Your Good Faith Estimate will be uploaded to your client portal at the time that you schedule an initial appointment.  However, you can ask our intake coordinator or your provider for this estimate before you schedule a service or at any other time during treatment.  If you receive a bill over $400 more than your good faith estimate, you can dispute the bill.  For more information regarding the good faith estimate and/or dispute process, see your good faith estimate or visit https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
