The Peer Guide Academy – Peer Counseling Training Program is a specialized summer training program designed for high school students who want to develop peer counseling skills and become compassionate leaders. Created and led by licensed psychologist Dr. Stephanie Rooney, this hybrid program equips teens with active listening techniques, emotional literacy, and effective communication strategies to support their peers.
Through hands-on training, video skill demonstrations, and interactive practice, students will learn to build trust, foster positive relationships, and provide support in a way that helps others flourish. Participants who demonstrate key counseling and mentoring skills will receive a certificate of completion and be eligible for future advanced peer counseling programs.
Program Breakdown
Part I: Four 2-hour in-person training sessions (June 16 - 19, 2024)
Part II: Remote learning via video – skill display and submission for review (July 2024)
Part III: In-person 4-hour review, practice, and evaluation session (August 8, 2024)

Who Should Apply?
This program is open to students ages 14-18 (rising 9th - rising 12th graders) who are eager to build leadership, empathy, and peer counseling skills. Spots are limited to 15 participants.
Enrollment & Price
This is a selective, application-based program. Interested students must submit a video application and participate in a 15-minute Google Meet interview by April 30, 2024. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by mid-May.
Once accepted, families will receive a registration link via email to complete payment. This program requires a non-refundable $300 deposit to secure a spot, with the remaining balance billed one week before the program’s start date. Total price is $1,500, reimbursable by PPO health insurance, medical flexible spending, or health savings accounts.
Payments and Refunds
At the time of registration, families may either pay in full or place a non-refundable deposit of $300 to hold their teen’s spot. The remaining balance will be charged one week before the program begins. Payments are non-refundable and non-transferable to future groups.
Cancellations made within ten or fewer business days before the first session may be eligible for a transfer or refund only if we successfully fill the vacated spot with a waitlisted applicant. Otherwise, the cancellation will be considered nonrefundable and non-transferable.
Please note that the program fee is not prorated for any absences, whether planned or unplanned, and no refunds will be provided for missed sessions due to the limited number of participating students and families.
Attendance Policy
Participants may miss up to one session of the program. If a participant will miss more than one session, whether it's planned or unplanned, they must schedule an individual review session with the program instructor at the clinician’s individual therapy hourly rate ($367/hour).
Disclaimer
This program requires a minimum of 5 participants to run. Families will be notified a week before the program starts if enrollment minimums are not met.
